Gaviota Coast Big Winner of First Classic
Awesome Day, enthusiastic competitors, tough fishing were hallmarks of initial Gaviota Coast Conservancy/The Sportfishing Conservancy “Classic.”
This past Saturday a full field of fishers converged on the Gaviota coast vying for honor and prizes in the first Conservancy Classic surf fishing competition. Starting at Goleta Beach Park weather was awesome, but surf conditions (with more 'salad' than fish) proved challenging.  Saturday was one of those days where “Fishing was great, but the catching was tough,” as the saying goes. Despite the conditions, Alice Lee walked away with a hard fought tournament victory.  Other winners included Cooper Stoddard garnering second place with Leo Shuman posting the third best performance. It's also important to recognize local realtor, Marco Farrell, who sponsored all of our junior anglers. Marco is a talented fisherman in his own right, who understands how important it is to get kids outside and involved in the out of doors. Congratulations to all.
After the weigh-in, while everyone held their breath and raffle tickets, GCC’s go-to volunteer, Janet Koed, got an unexpected but fitting bonus when her name was drawn as the grand prize Kayak winner. Congrats. Most of all, a big shout out goes to all participants who helped raise over $500 for the Gaviota Coast Conservancy to further their mission supporting the Gaviota coast, including recreational access. We look forward to seeing everyone back next year.
NOTE: GCC President, Steve Forsell (pictured), walked away winning a tackle pack and new t-shirt (size large)…
